Description
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) foam is a closed-cell foam: soft, elastic and light, it does not absorb water and cleans with a damp cloth. It gives under the hand and springs back, it does not splinter, and even after cutting it has no hard edges.
Where we used it
For TATCH, an interactive installation for children in the Balena room of Triennale Milano, we laser cut the installation elements in EVA foam; children pick them up, move them around and rearrange them on the floor.
Notes for laser cutting
The laser slightly melts and seals the edge: the cut is clean, with a slightly rounded profile. The material compresses, so dimensions have a wider tolerance than rigid materials: for joints and parts that must fit together, a test is worthwhile.
Details that are too thin will tear: load-bearing parts should be at least as wide as the sheet thickness. Engravings leave a shallow groove in the material.
